As more consumers are choosing to engage in eco-conscious lifestyles at home, it’s unsurprising that their tastes in hotels and travel destinations are becoming greener, too. Eco friendly travel options were projected to increase up to 36percent in 2017 in order to meet green traveller’s demands. Business travel is also going greener, with many corporations implementing booking policies that require travelling employees to stay in sustainable hotels.

These days, therefore it’s crucial for our Hotel to adopt more eco-friendly practices so our business can stay competitive, attract more travellers, save money, and do its part to protect the planet. Here are just some of our ways to make the Agapinor hotel more sustainable.

Conservation of Energy

Reducing energy can enhance guest experience and by making some simple changes to how we use energy we can make a big impact on the environment.

Therefore we use long-lasting LED lights and sensors throughout the Hotel to reduce electricity use, along with more use of natural light during the day.

Energy-saving kitchen, laundry, and air conditioning equipment are also used and this drastically reduces the energy use of our hotel.

Limiting Water Waste

Water conservation is important for all business sustainability initiatives, but especially for hotels that host numerous guests throughout the year.

But why conserve water? For one, water is a limited source, so the less water wasted the better. Using water in excess can also lead to groundwater contamination if sewage systems overflow. By conserving water, we also reduce energy use.

Therefore by installing low-flow taps, shower heads and toilets, as well as sink aerators in hotel rooms we have greatly reduced water wastage on a daily basis.

Ditching Disposables

Some room amenities can wreak havoc on the environment. Therefore using toiletries in biodegradable or recyclable packaging and swapping plastic and paper cups with reusable glasses, is another great way used to reduce waste in guest rooms.

Have Guests Reuse Linens

Linen reuse is great in terms of reducing water and energy waste. Therefore we encourage our guests to reuse their towels, sheets, and bedding so housekeeping can cut back on how many times they need to use the washing machines and dryers every day. We also use “Do not disturb” signs so guests can easily let our staff know when they plan to reuse their linens.

Equipping Staff with Eco-Friendly Cleaning Supplies

Swapping out conventional cleaning supplies with green cleaning products helps to offer a safer, more natural environment to guests. This can be achieved by using bio-based cleaning products instead of chlorine and petrochemical-based cleaners that can be harsh on our skin, and pollute the planet.

Serving Local Food

When eco-minded travellers search for a hotel, they want to make sure they can easily dine on healthy, sustainable cuisine. Offering local, seasonal, food is a great way to ensure that our guests are dining on fresh, delicious, eco-friendly meals. Opting to serve local ingredients also brings guests closer to our local community and its unique culture.

Many hotels and resorts are now composting their food waste to divert food from landfills. Therefore instead of throwing scraps in the dustbins, we compost organic matter whenever possible to reduce our rubbish removal expenses, environmental impact, and gain a positive perception among travellers.

Installation of Eco-Friendly filtration systems

Industrial water filtration systems are already being utilized to meet the demands of our guests. Implementing this reduces our negative impact on the environment.

Sustainability and Eco-Friendly Hotel Initiatives

As environmental concerns and the popularity of eco-friendly practices continue to increase, it’s important for our Hotel to continually expand our own knowledge of sustainability, one such topic is that of eco-friendly or "green" hotel initiatives. Therefore even though we are a budget-friendly Hotel we are taking steps to make our practices and business more sustainable.

Introduction to Sustainable Hotel Practices

Agapinor Hotel wants to increase the sustainability of the services that we offer. Just a few years ago, we decided upon the following initiatives to adopt within the Hotel as a starting point for sustainable practices. These initiatives have since become the norm.

Hotel Energy Conservation

From central operations such as boilers to lighting systems, kitchen equipment, and automated energy management systems, we are continually working to reduce energy use while sustaining and whenever possible enhancing our guests experience.

Hotel Water Conservation

Within the guest rooms, laundry, kitchen and pool areas, our hotel continues to phase inefficiencies that reduce water and, in many cases, chemicals that are used to treat water systems and clean facilities. Efforts include the linen and towel reuse program that are now an industry standard to the installation of low-flow taps, shower heads, toilets, and other fixtures.

Hotel Recycling and Waste Reduction

We are continually striving to recycle where ever possible and for waste reduction we have implemented a food waste composting programme to assist in diverting and reducing the waste away from landfill sites.

Hotel Bathroom Amenities

By using toiletries in biodegradable or recyclable packaging and swapping plastic and paper cups with reusable glasses this is reducing waste.

Hotel Room Keys

No use of plastic key cards policy.

Hotel Cleaning Products

Recognizing the importance of safer products for guests and employees as well as the natural environment, moving to cleaning products that are made with bio-based oils and other natural cleaners is the way forward.

By making the switch, we are reducing the use of products with chlorine bleach and petrochemical derivatives. These more natural products have demonstrated performance and are less irritating to guests, employees, and the environment.

Hotel Food Preparation

Integrating local products and using fresh, seasonal produce and other ingredients is a significant focus of our hotels food and beverage programmes. A shift to more sustainable and healthier cuisine offers guests unique opportunities to experience a greater connection to the locations they are visiting in a more sustainable way.

Water Alternatives

Industrial water filtration systems are already being utilized to meet the demands of our guests. Implementing this reduces our negative impact on the environment.

The Bottom Line

As a Hotel we are continually updating our knowledge and the practices that we implement within our property, including our guest rooms, food and beverage departments and services in order that to make more informed choices towards increasing our sustainability and the effect that our Hotel has on the environment.
